AHNE Bryniau Clwyd / Clwydian Range AONB

Information for land managers

Good management is not only vital to maintain our internationally important heather moorland as a wildlife habitat.

From a farming point of view it also leads to improved grazing and a reduction in pests such as sheep ticks – which means stock come off the mountain in better condition and the risk of devastating wild fires is reduced.

Heather cuttingBut in recent years it’s been harder for farmers and graziers to manage the moorland. Traditional agricultural practices have changed and there’s less labour available.

Nevertheless this management is still possible and important. The AONB has been working with farmers across the Clwydian Range and Llantysilio Mountains to share best practice and provide practical help and resources.

These guidelines should help you through the process of cutting and burning the heather and controlling bracken.
